Welcome to the IP Home Port Forum. This forum is the latest addition to IP Home Port, a totally free volunteer-operated website that has served Island Packet Yacht owners (and wannabes!) around the world since 1998.
This new forum uses the latest available message board technology to give members different options for posting questions, researching topics, and sharing information. Features include a powerful search tool, Private Messaging, on-line polling, and a flexible category structure designed to help organize the wide variety of knowledge that will certainly accumulate over time.
Some may ask why this new forum is necessary when there is already an active Island Packet Discussion Group (IPDG) hosted by SailNet. With all due respect to the fine folks at SailNet for their generosity in hosting the IPDG in the past, there are multiple reasons :
- This new forum has significantly better functionality. There is a multiple level category structure along with a built-in search feature to enable keyword searching of all past posts. There is an immediate notification option available to let you know when someone replies to one of your posts as well as a daily e-mail digest for your favorite categories. This new forum also supports in-line images, attachments, and even includes a spell-checker.
- In this age of excessive e-mail and spam some users have elected to drop out of the IPDG due to the potential for additional e-mail traffic, whether from the IPDG itself or from unscrupulous harvesting of e-mail addresses. This forum enables participation without exposing your e-mail address to others. The Private Messaging feature offers a secure alternative for one-to-one communications.
- This forum is the logical extension of the original Home Port concept. A number of owners (especially new ones) have asked why there wasn't a forum included with all of the other features - they simply expected one based on their experience with similar communities elsewhere.
- The user account structure of this forum will be used as the basis for new and better features scheduled for addition to the existing IP Home Port website. There will be 'Members Only' features that can only be accessed with a valid username and password. The website and the forum will be integrated such that only a single sign on will be required.
